if it rips out your heart,
that's a good picture." - Eddie Adams

FOR THE MYSTERY OF THE MOMENT —
(Thoughts from Behind the Lens)

For me, it's like a song.
Photojournalism is this special opportunity to completely immerse yourself into something you've never known before, while somehow thinking like an expert, anticipating the next move. The trick is to adapt, quickly — and be respectful always — then, you can allow yourself to really try and feel it. Dance along.

Acknowledge, there's so much you don't know and intend to understand, but respect that while you have a front row seat, and might even be a key player at times; you're just a visitor. Keep your distance, study the moment. Listen.

There's a fine line of composing the shot and being in it. You must blend with your surroundings to experience the unordinary, but like the lone wolf on the hill, keep watch with the backlight of the moon.

A combination of documentation and inquisitive playfulness seem to find me at the right shots at the right time.

Composition, subject, lighting and color. When these elements harmoniously flow together they create a pathway of new understanding.
A keen watch, a calm disposition and the focus on the present moment. Perspective is everything.

Breathe in. Focus. Click. Breathe out. Repeat.

Like a metronome, constantly swaying in the background, that moment calls to me, a whisper in the wind, I listen with my heart and follow the sound.
